My opinion:
Through reading the book 'Introduction to media', I sourced new vocabulary and technical terms that I had not come across before, to do with distribution, media, and production. Some words have prompted me to research more about their meaning, whereas others are clearly explained by the authors. I decided to create a list of keywords I thought would be useful to me, and help me be more with writing my essay, so I can be more direct, technical, accurate and to the point; especially with the low word count for our essay.

The below information about audience demographics will be used in any questionnaires that are used. I will take into consideration audience demographics and target audience's relationship with media platforms and distribution. I would like to research into audience's preference for distribution.

Keywords:
---------------
Program ratings: Ratings refer to the percentage of t.vs (on or off) tuned to a program, out of all of the t.vs in households. Ratings = the percentage of this.

Shares:  Shares indicate the % of t.vs in households actually watching the program at a specific time.   (i.e: If 20 million are watching telly,  and 10 million of those are watching the program, 50 % is the viewing figure.)

Hits: The number of times a website has been searched for.

The Big Ten of Distribution: Am/FM terrestrial radio, Hc radio (IBOC), mobile, satellite, terrestrial television, cable/ telcos, Disk/Disc, The internet, games, Motion pictures.

Total Audience measurement index (TAMI):

advertising penetration: Number of people who have heard of a project.

analog signal:

digital signal:

solid state:

Convergence: coming together of previously separated technologies

For internet;

- The internet is a low cost for producers,
easily accessible. (6)

- It's easier to measure internet 'Hits' than tv ratings. (3)

-'The internet now and in the future will hold a major position in the distribution of all forms of media content, whether professionally created or from the cameras, microphones, computers, and minds of amateurs' (9).

For convergence;
'Digitalized signals of any media producer now may reach an audience in almost infinitive different paths of distribution.' (6)

People should take advantage of a variety of methods of distribution (6).

'Commercial producers and distributors often rely on market research to estimate audience size and the preference of audiences that might be drawn to a particular subject'(3).
I.e One should distribute where the target audience is (3); I may be able to find out the best methods of distribution for different audiences after researching with a survey.

quotes:
'The internet, originally considered as a super-sized mail system, became practical means of distributing all forms of media- audio, video, graphics,  at a low cost and within reach of anyone with a computer and internet connection.  Because of two factors, of low cost and accessibility, most concepts of media production distributing and exhibition had to be a reconsidered and restructured for producers  to remain competitive, gain funding for productions and reach target audiences' (1)

'Audience Analysis;
- Choice of medium
- size of the audience
- budget justification
- audience expectations
- choice of medium formats' (2)

'Audience Demographics;
-Age
- Culture
- Gender
- Langauge
- Income
- Education
- Relgion'

'The nature and preference of the audience can be used to determine a project's format, subject matter, and structure, as well as the budget.'(3)

' While audiences research is no substitute for professional experience, it can give scientific, static validity to production decisions that might otherwise be based solely on less reliable hunches and guesses.' (3)

'Television ratings provide audience information in the form of program ratings, shares demographic break downs for national and regional television markets.' (3)

'methods of determining audience value on the internet is made easier by the system of counting the number of times a website has been opened or "hit" in search. Hits provide an exact count of the number of times an audience has been on a site, but it does not tell how often they stayed or reacted.' (3)

'The method of measuring hits is more accurate than ratings but is still not an absolute measurement of audience reaction- pleasure or displeasure.'(3)

'Total audience measurement index (TAMI) is in development in all media simultaneously  broadcasting, cable, satellite, internet, and mobile use as a total research value.'(3)

(I wonder if this is still true, or if it is all fully developed now, considering this text was a decade ago.)

'Commercial  producers and distributors often rely on market research to estimate audience size and the preference of audiences that might be drawn to a particular subject.'(3)

'The title of the project, a list of key talent, the nature of the subject matter or a synopsis of the storyline, for example, might be given to a test audience and their responses are recorded and evaluated.' (3)

'Research has shown that by far the best predictors of a feature film success is advertising penetration, (number of people  who have heard about a project.) Predictors of success appear to be the financial success of directors prior to work, the current popularity of specific performers or stars and the interest generated by basic storyline presented in written form.'(3)

'Some television programs and commercials will be dropped and others aired solely on the basis of audience presenting storylines, character portrayals and editing are some times changed after audiences testing.'  (4)

'Audience research has to be recognized as an important element in the production process .... to provide insurance against undertaking expensive projects that have no likelihood of reaching target audiences or generate profits.'(4)

'Non-commercial audience research often focuses on assessment of audience needs and program effectiveness. A project that is not designed to make money often justifies production costs on the basis of corporate, government or cultural needs as well as audience preference and size.' (5)

'A successful children's program is often based on audience research that assures program effectiveness. For example, the fast-paced, humorous, instructional style of Sesame Street, which mirrors television commercials, and comedy programs, was based on exhaustive audience research.'

'Whether it's used during pre-production or post-production, audience research can strengthen a program and widen its appeal.'

'Digital equipment maybe manufactured smaller, requiring less power, and producing higher quality signals for recording and processing, as a result, reasonably priced equipment, within the reach of consumers now produce video and audio productions that exceed the quality of those created by professional equipment of less than two decades ago.'

'every electronic signal  begins as an analog signal  and ends as an analog signal since the human eye can and ear can not directly translate a digital signal.'

'The lifetime of a disc may also be dated as solid-state recording media such as P2 and other flash type drives increases their capacity and their cost decreases.'  (6)

'Todays production [2009] personnel may take advantage of the digital evolution to change the product technologies now available as well as the increased range of methods distribution of media productions.'   (6)

'Digitalized signals of any media producer now may reach an audience in almost infinitive different paths of distribution.'  (6)

'The Big Ten of Distribution:
-Am/FM terrestrial radio
-Hc radio (IBOC),
mobile,
 satellite,
 terrestrial television,
 cable/ telcos,
 Disk/Disc,
The internet,
games,
Motion pictures.' (7)

'Mobile;
Mobile consists of a rapidly expanding range of miniature digital-based equipment designed to provide the same service fixed position equipment provides in sending and receiving telephone messages, internet information, photographs, video, audio, and streaming programs.
Mobile systems also use wireless public systems to deliver a wide variety of mass communication programming.' (8)

' satellite: separate radio/ television systems use satellite to feed signals from central head ends to a wide area of receiving antenna aimed at the satellite, both systems, like digital radio and cable television, require a monthly subscription thee, satellite competes directly with cable, offering the same program channels, but it may provide local stations to specific areas.' (8)

'Terrestrial television: broadcasting, aims to please the largest audience to serve advertisers who pay for free television.'(8)

'Cable/ telcos: Provide direct, wired video, telephone and internet connections to their subscribers. Telephone and cable companies compete head to head in all three areas of service; telephone, television, internet services; and they compete with satellite for programming services.' (9)

'the internet; the internet has become so pervasive, so all-encompassing it is difficult to accurately analyze its individual value as a distribution system or systems.' (9)

'The internet now and in the future will hold a major position in the distribution of all forms of media content, whether professionally created or from the cameras, microphones, computers, and minds of amateurs.' (9)

Motion pictures; the complete product that is distributed and shown in the theaters, on television, and on the internet is a 'motion picture' the medium is film and the industry that distributes the final product is called the motion picture industry.' (10)
'
'Convergence: coming together of previously separated technologies.' (12)
