Streaming- Pros and negatives - my notes-
FOR:
- an Alternative to traditional tv
-There is now broadcasting companies expanding into internet streaming companies,
For example Disney+, Peacock. The future gives it the best of both worlds with broadcasting and online streaming programs- with 'plans to offer “news, sports, late-night and reality” on top of its library of shows.' Which makes it good for consumers.
- There is already a competitive market, and a lot of varieties and options;
for example Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix, Sling Tv, Youtube, Fubo TV, AT&T TV Now, Philo, (Pendlebury and Katzmaier, 2019)
- Highly accessible, with multiple platforms to watch from; Smart TVs, game consoles, mobile phones, Apps, web browsers (Watson, 2019)
- Already extremely popular; 'US consumers now spend nearly as much time watching videos as they do working' (Cook, 2019)
-Very profitable, As of 2017 streaming brought in around 12.5 billion dollars. (Watson, 2019)
- A prediction by (Yanev, 2019) sees an increase to $124.6 billion in the next six years with in the streaming industry.
-Younger generations are using mobile devices more than television, with '65% consuming sports content on mobile devices', its argued by (Yanev, 2019) that 'Millennials are consuming everything through their phones or tablets'.
- 'In this day and age, everything is about information and productivity' (Yanev,2019). Which with its quick and mobile access, streaming has become perfect for our needs.
As a positive, it has planned deals with film and animation companies; bring original content and keeping the film industry (even though in a different way) going. ('NBCUniversal has also struck deals with Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation, and Illumination to provide original movies for Peacock.'
There is a lot of choice and options, with the industry being competitive, its likely to try to keep audiences invested by deals and new content.
AGAINST
-Very competitive - 'confirming earlier reports, that NBCUniversal planned to pull The Office from Netflix, where it has enjoyed huge success.'
This may be unattractive to producers, as it seems very competitive, with many platforms almost 'battling' against each other.
Despite it being good for new content coming out, it changes the viewer's experience of exhibition. the home streaming of films will most likely kill the DVD, and cinema industry.
Relies on a good internet connection (Kennemer and Cohen, 2019)
