Points about convergence, good and the bad

The new
-'Every time a new medium comes along in the television market place, the feeling is that it is going to knock out the old and we should be threatened by new technology,  instead as content providers, we see great opportunities from this ourselves and also for the advertisers that use our medium to communicate to their consumers(Owens, 2016)

Peacocks (a streaming site in the works) gives television the best of both worlds with broadcasting and online streaming programs, with 'plans to offer “news, sports, late-night and reality” channels on streaming, converging the traditional with the new (Cohen, 2019).

The new streaming site, 'Peacocks' is advancing the film industry in a new way, with planned deals with film and animation companies to produce original films exclusive to Peacock- not only pushing forward the film industry but giving a new and modern viewing experience (Cohen, 2019).

Disney, a company that began as an animation company and developed into a variety of things, such as clothes, theme parks, music videos, tv shows, live-action films, games, toys, is now adding on On-demand streaming; 'Disney+' keeping up with the current trends (Matyus, 2019).

Apple, another big company for convergence, 'pads', 'iPhone', etc that have computer abilities, music and much more, now has an addition of Online streaming called 'Apple TV+' (Matyus, 2019).

For convergence;
'Digitalized signals of any media producer now may reach an audience in almost infinitive different paths of distribution'(Musburger and Kindem, 2009, p.6).

The convergence of streaming sites on a variety of computer devices allows home exhibitions as well as a mobile exhibition of films and programs (Pendlebury and Katzmaier, 2019).

People should take advantage of a variety of methods of distribution (Musburger and Kindem, 2009, p.6).

'Commercial producers and distributors often rely on market research to estimate audience size and the preference of audiences that might be drawn to a particular subject' (Musburger and Kindem, 2009,p.3).

I.e One should distribute where the target audience is (3); I may be able to find out the best methods of distribution for different audiences after researching with a survey (Musburger and Kindem, 2009, p.3).

"The definition of television is changing... when you put video on a device, it becomes television. Television is growing to other devices... television is the programming." Christopher, vice president of Digital News media, Turner entertainment'(Owens, 2016, p.2).

'Television definition now embraces new technologies such as large-screen televisions, computers, the internet, tablets, and smartphones (Owens, 2016, p.2).

'Todays audience is a hyperconnected world... they are looking for quality content that is accessible whenever they want it' (Owens, 2016, p.2).

'I do not believe that the Internet will ever replace the t.v. Instead, I think they will be one and the same - Tripp Grosby'(Owens, 2016, p.399).

More Uk shows are being watched because of their accessibility through multiple platforms (Brown and Duthie, 2016, p.72).

Because of On-demand technology, Uk television doesn't have audiences that are restricted by time and schedules, they can reach the whole world with its multiple platform releases, without being affected by time zone differences (Brown and Duthie, 2016, p.72).

With some online streaming sites, it is clear there is a convergence of other digital features, such as the ability to cast things to your tv through your phone or anything on the web; you can mirror anything from a pc or android to your tv set, you can also download apps and play games. (Kennemer and Cohen, 2019). It brings different technology devices together, connecting them and enhancing each of their abilities, and making it muti functional; watch, play, learn, create.

As mentioned before, (Watson, 2019) also comments on the connectivity of Streaming sites, mentioning how you can access Netflix from multiple smart devices, gaming consoles and apps on a variety of mobile devices.

Just less than half of the percentage of the Us has a streaming device, with an increase of 5% it would be half and half. It can be expected with new technology constantly coming out, and the demand for updating devices in the modern digital era, this percentage is more than likely to increase greatly in the next decade (Watson, 2019).

With having the accessibility to connect to everything anything, with all technology being connected, collecting information quickly and multi-tasking, we can learn more about what we're watching and do so much more, increasing productivity. As (Yanev, 2019) describes, 'In this day and age, everything is about information and productivity. We prefer to receive as much of it as possible in the shortest amount of time'.

73% of people still have a traditional tv, because of the convergence of internet and landline deals (Cook, 2019).

You can now watch Live programs from networks on streaming sites such as 'YouTube TV' and 'Sling Tv'; Once again showing how the platforms are all becoming connected as one (Pendlebury and Katzmaier, 2019).

Current streaming sites, for example, Amazon Fire Tv involves using Apps on smart devices as a remote to watch streaming on television (Pendlebury and Katzmaier, 2019).

Streaming devices allow simultaneous streams, to different devices at once (Pendlebury and Katzmaier)

(Pendlebury and Katzmaier, 2019) suggests having both a streaming service and an antenna; to access the highest quality of live tv and the ability to access on-demand programming, according to (Pendlebury and Katzmaier, 2019) the combination is still cheaper than traditional cable tv on its own.

Streaming has great potential for convergence in multiple media; however, there are different streaming behavior for different target groups that need to be researched (The Nielsen Company (US), 2019).

Streaming sites do not just contain moving images, but some are including still images, such as comics; the converge of films and comics from the Dc Universe brings art and story together in new ways that are easily accessible (Gates, 2019).

Netflix is connecting the world together by producing and distributing original content, produced in different countries, accessible by anyone to watch (Levenson and Waniata, 2019).

Many companies that were traditionally cable or satellite are advancing into streaming services as well as there former selves, some are offering themselves as 'standalone apps' (Levenson and Waniata, 2019).

Amazon Prime converges shopping, digital storage, streaming of both moving image and music, combing multiple needs of entertainment, productivity in a variety of ways (Levenson and Waniata, 2019).

Amazon Prime connects people together digitally way (compared to the traditional way of sitting in front of a screen together, by connecting and sharing accounts between family and friends (Levenson and Waniata, 2019).
134.2 million of U.S streamed 'non-linear video' using internet-connected devices or smart televisions, to tv sets- This is 40 million more than two years ago. (2019 The Nielsen Company (US), 2019)
there is a high percentage of those who stream using the internet convergence (internet radio, social sites, e.g.) to those who are non-streamers.

Companies like Amazon, Apple, and Google are creating 'ecosystems' with their linking devices; for example (Kennemer and Cohen, 2019) describes Amazons franchise as the 'Alexa ecosystem'; with people depending on the linking technology of Amazon Products, such as smart home device, Amazon's Prime as a music distributor, the Fire Tv cube streaming service, online shopping and so much more.

'Chromecast, the wildly popular streaming dongle, doesn’t have a remote or on-screen menu, instead of using your smartphone or tablet to “cast” content at your TV'(Kennemer and Cohen, 2019)

'seeing all of the service’s latest shows, including Game of Thrones, Westworld, Silicon ValleyVeep, and more, all at the same time as they appear on the traditional service.' (Kennemer and Cohen, 2019)

THE OLD:

'Cable/ telcos: Provide direct, wired video, telephone and internet connections to their subscribers. Telephone and cable companies compete head to head in all three areas of service; telephone, television, internet services; and they compete with satellite for programming services.' (Musburger and Kindem, 2009, p.9).

'There is the talk of an imminent convergence, of the personal computer, the internet, and TV all coming together on an intelligible and workable screen. Television has responded by making half-hearted attempts at becoming more "interactive"' (Anthony, 2017).

The BAD:

With new film content being distributed to streaming sites instead of traditional ways, it takes away the viewing experience to exhibit films in a cinema (Cohen, 2019).
